A mild biotin deficiency can result in hair loss, dermatitis, weakness and lethargy, cradle cap in infants, muscle aches, nausea, depression, loss of appetite, insomnia, high cholesterol levels, eye inflammations, sensitivity to touch, anemia, and tingling in the hands and feet. A severe deficiency can lead to heart problems, paralysis, hallucinations, and loss of immune functions. If you take sulfa drugs, estrogen, anticonvulsants, or abuse alcohol, you need to increase the amount of your daily biotin supplement. In addition, long term use of antibiotics prevents the friendly bacteria in your intestine from synthesizing biotin, so augmentation with lactobacillus may help restore bacterial balance following an extended period of antibiotic use. There are two other groups who are at risk of severe biotin deficiency: patients who are fed intravenously; and anyone who habitually eats a lot of raw egg whites. (Raw egg whites contain a protein that prevents the absorption of biotin; cooked egg whites are fine.)
Dietary sources of biotin include cheese, organ meats, soy products, egg yolks, nuts, broccoli, sweet potatoes, oatmeal, beans, brewer's yeast, peanuts and peanut butter, molasses, cauliflower, chocolate, oysters, poultry, wheat germ, and whole grains. The biotin used in Daily Vita Plus is plant derived.
